Do You Own A Camera?
Do you believe that 90% of people have only taken photos on a camera phone versus a camera? In the article I was reading the author said he did not believe the statistic was true. I think his opinion is coming from a very American point of view. The statistic was not referenced so there is no way to know where it came from. However, there are other statistics that are well documented. Like the fact that more than 1.3 billion people live in extreme poverty barely surviving on less than $1.25 a day. And nearly ½ of the world’s population, more that 3 billion people, live on less that $2.50 a day. Overall 80% of the world population lives on less than $10 a day. These people are not spending their money on cameras. However, they are spending money on the ability to communicate. More people on earth have access to cell phones than toilets. Out of the world’s estimated 7 billion people, 6 billion have access to mobile phones. It has been amazing to watch the increase in mobile phone around the world over the past 15 years. These phones are not iphones with high quality cameras.
Because people don’t have cameras they don’t have printed pictures of themselves. We at MissionFocused know this first hand as we interact with people we are talking photos of. We did not just want to be another bunch of photographers who come into a village and get a kick out of how the kids react when we show a few photo to them on the camera. Our desire is to leave them with a lasting image of themselves.
This man told us he had one other photo of himself. Thank you Canon for making these nice little portable printers.
Here are a few of the women who were thankful for their photos.
photo peeps this wednesday…april 13th
photo peeps this wednesday, april 13th, 7pm at the rock in room 353
all are welcome
we have just begun an extended series of classes on film photography…this is our 3rd week, we dive into the film camera this wednesday.
homework for this wednesdays class…same as last week
get yourself a disposable film camera, from whereva…and take photos. take the camera and get the film developed and have the photos put on a cd. pick out your favorite 3 photos from the lot and get ready to share in class about the photos and your experience.
this is a class on photography, exploring the fun you can have with film. so it helps if you have a film camera. some things to know:
- film isnt free. so this class will require you to pay for film and developing. and there will be 2 more times you will be required to purchase a disposable camera and you will be strongly encouraged to buy a holga film camera as well.
- you dont have to have a film camera to participate. if all you have is a digital camera, you can still have fun with us. there are a few restrictions you must agree to abide by. we will have that list in class for you.
- you dont have to buy a film slr camera. a point n shoot film camera is fine.
- if you dont have a film camera but would like to purchase a camera… we recommend going to nelson photo, in little italy to see if they have any used film cameras. they often carry a selection of used cameras for local colleges who offer film classes. or you can check out KEH.com, they have used camera gear you can purchase as well.
- if you cant afford to purchase a film camera right now, let us know. we have a few film cameras you can borrow.
- lastly, photography is fun. film photography is fun. we like to have fun!
again, all are welcome! with or without a film camera. if you have any questions, please feel free to contact us at

last official photo peeps class of the year this wed nite at the rock church so dont miss it or you will be sad…
photo peeps, this wed nite, 7pm, room 352 at the rock. come and have fun with us!
this will be our last official class, concluding our intro to photography series. now that weve talked about the basics of the camera and photo composition…we will be talking about photo gear and equipment.
it will be a time to talk about cameras, lenses, flahses, tripods and other fun stuff. we will be discussing the pros and cons of buying new vs. used equipment. and whether you should buy locally, like at our friends at nelson photo in little italy, or buy online. and things you should think about before you buy.
photography is fun!
rules are nice, but not set in stone. its fun to break the rules every now and then.
but when it comes to buying gear…if the deal is too good to be true, it probably is! buyer beware!
and just because you spent $5k on a brand new camera and lens package doesnt mean your gonna be the next ansel adams or jim wanglund. learn to use and master what you got, learn to take photos that you like and are happy with…then no matter what you “upgrade” to (a new camera) or “downgrade” to (a pinhole camera), you will have more fun!
we will also be sharing photos from our recent outing to balboa park on saturday nite as well. come and have fun with us this wed nite.
any questions feel free to email us photoministry@therocksandiego.org
hope to see yall this wed
